Tales of the Cocktail Partners with Green Dot for Violence Prevention

NEW ORLEANS, LA—May 9, 2017—Tales of the Cocktail® is proud to announce a ground-breaking partnership with Green Dot, etc., a violence-prevention organization whose mission statement is to reduce interpersonal violence through community awareness, and arm people with tactics to spot and intervene in violent situations. With Green Dot’s guidance, Tales will develop a sexual assault prevention training seminar for members of the bar industry. The first phase of this collaboration is to be a series of focus groups conducted with those in the service industry to help build a bystander workshop for the Tales of the Cocktail® 2017. The seminar—which is free to enter—will be held on Tuesday, July 18 from 10:30 am to 1 pm.

“This is an incredibly important initiative that could bring about a positive change in bars around the world,” states Ann Tuennerman, Founder of Tales of the Cocktail®. “By opening up this dialog and providing tactics that bar professionals can use, we can create an even greater sense of awareness around violence prevention among our industry, making bars safer places for everyone to enjoy.”

At the 90-minute bystander workshop, attendees will learn how to establish a workplace environment that is intolerant to all forms of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, dating or domestic violence, stalking, and harassment. The workshop aims to coach attendees in learning how to recognize concerning behaviors, and acknowledge certain barriers that make it difficult to intervene. Finally, participants will engage in realistic reactive and proactive bystander behaviors, which will ultimately result in a reduction of interpersonal violence in their establishments. Those who attend this workshop will leave inspired to do their part in preventing workplace violence, and they will possess the tools to engage those around them to do the same.

GreenrnDot plans to build on the workshop at Tales of the Cocktail® by creating a comprehensive certification program for industry professionals, which is scheduled for release in 2018. This program will include an expanded workshop for bar managers and owners that will provide more in-depth skills, social media strategies, and a toolkit designed for use in their establishments to educate patrons on violence prevention.

Tales of the Cocktail® asks industry members to participate in online surveys that are to be conducted in coming months. The information that Green Dot takes from these conversations, alongside data collected from several virtual focus groups and interviews, will help them to develop a curriculum designed around issues specific to the bar industry. Their program is the first of its kind developed with the bar industry as a specific focus, and, with the crucial input from industry members, Green Dot aims to ensure its maximum effectiveness.

The generous sponsors who make this program possible are:
